Chapter 5
James had been dialing Julie's cell phone since he arrived at her parents' house the morning the Petersons realized Julie's bed hadn't been slept in. His blood raced in his veins as he thought of her looking at her phone and seeing his number, then laughing as she ignored him.
She must have thought she was really something special, not taking his calls, making him take time out of his busy day to rush to her house and make things clear to her. When he called, she had better answer the phone or have a perfect reason why she couldn't. A temper tantrum was not a good enough answer.
It never even occurred to James that Julie might just have her phone off. Instead, he had it all figured out in his mind that she was trying to beat him, control him and manipulate him, which was something no woman would ever do.
He raced up the Petersons' driveway, the tires squealing as he slammed on the brakes, turned the engine off, and slammed the door with force. Only Carl, one of the groundskeepers that maintained the Peterson's beautiful property, saw this display of hostility. He shook his head and looked down, feeling a slight twinge of shame for not saying something to Mr. Peterson about what he had seen, had heard that man say to Julie so many times before.
He had known Julie since she was a baby, and she never once didn't wave hello or say good morning when she was out underneath her daydreaming tree. She was the real life of the house, and it was noticeably gloomier when she wasn't around. And he knew that James was no good.
But what could he say? Who was he to interfere in the affairs of his employer's daughter? If anything, that would get him reprimanded if not fired altogether.
So, he let out his breath and stuck with what he knew: tending the flowers, trees, and grass. He watched as the tall, good-looking man in blue jeans and a blinding white shirt stormed up the walk and let himself into the house.
Perhaps Carl would inch his way closer to the mimosa that grew along the windows and trim the stems that looked like they were about to become unruly. Yes, the mimosa was becoming a bit out of hand. But, a good, careful trim was all they would need.
Carl retrieved various hedge clippers and started trimming the mimosa bushes along the front room windows, listening to the commotion inside the house as the sun warmed his face and back.

"What? Well, where did she go?" James asked Margaret Peterson as she poured him a cup of coffee and had him sit in the living room. Richard sat pensively on a large overstuffed loveseat, a large cup of non-steaming coffee on the end table next to him.
"We don't know where she went, James," Margaret said, brushing her hair out of her eyes. It was just barely nine o'clock in the morning. Usually, Julie was
